Dropping out of a race before it even happens :-(

I made the decision today to not do the Women's Half Marathon in St. Petersburg, Florida.  The race is scheduled for November 20, the Sunday before Thanksgiving.  I think this is the best decision, but it doesn't mean I won't be doing a fall half.

I completed my first half marathon on May 14.  Not long there after, I signed up for the WHM in St. Pete.  I was still on the "high" from my half and didn't really think about everything involved in heading to Florida the week of Thanksgiving - totally not typical for me.  I didn't factor in the higher cost of airline tickets, the cost of hotel for the event, and the pretty high cost of transportation to/from the airport in Tampa to St. Petersburg.  I have to be honest that I am slightly disappointed, but in the end the decision will probably be for the best, but it sucks to be out the money for registration.  Anyone want to impersonate me? (Just kidding, kinda)

I am planning to work on modifying my fall half marathon training program this week.  I am going to wait a few more weeks, but I think I am going to sign up for the City of Oaks Half Marathon.  I was a course monitor for the race last year and enjoyed it.  So, still gonna do a fall race!!

  1. Aw, I'm sorry everything isn't going to work out quite as planned but it sounds like you've got a strategy. ::hugs::

  2. The cost does start to add up! That's why I do races where I have friends and family I can stay with. My Dad lives near Richmond, which is why I chose that half to do in November. Plus, it's a great race that is really highly ranked for overall awesomeness.

I'm very tempted to take you up on your impersonation offer. But I already paid for my race and I don't think I'll have the time or money for a trip to Fl either.

  3. Sorry it didn't work out, but I think canceling it ahead of time versus thinking about all these factors closer to the date of the actual race will save you stress in the end. :)
